I see that there are already two Scala communities in Lemmy and, while I don’t see any in Kbin, that looks like a nice alternative. Seems hard to say which one will take off 😅.
I’m kind of curious to see which one will win in the end. The fact that I don’t have to create any new account either way is very nice (no need to pick a side).

lemmy.mlinstance has some controversies regarding its maintainers, which may have an impact on adopters.programming.devseems safer for now, for programming communities; I just hope that it’s a well-maintained instance.@[email protected] I’ve heard about that, and agree that programming.dev is more appropriate.

Lemmy.ml has always been a niche site, and it will most likely stay this way.
If you dont like the way lemmy.ml works, thats okay. Federation exists exactly to solve that problem, let different groups have their own instances, with their own rules and political views.
So, while lemmy.ml is meant to be niche and opinionated, at least the software seem to be quite “agnostic”.
Sharing this mostly to avoid people moving to kbin due to FUD (although IMO kbin does look nicer)
I think people fear a problematic “BDFL”. On the other hand, the beauty of FOSS is that it can be forked in case you don’t agree with the current owners.
I heard that Lemmy is the second most popular software on the Fediverse, and choosing between Lemmy and kbin doesn’t have much impact due to the interop (although I hope to see tools for easy migration, if needed). What matters is how well the instance is maintained, and the community.

That’s the only reason why I’m so invested in federated protocols :)
Of course it adds convenience if there happen to be a single place for the community to organize around, but you can subscribe to the alternatives and your feed wouldn’t look different. I would also expect lemmy to, at some point, grow a feature to “link” communities together (like “spaces” in Matrix, that you subscribe to and get a list of related rooms/groups/communities in return).
