Hey all. What’s your favourite survival games?

For me, Project Zomboid, but I have a soft spot for Valheim and Minecraft.

Out of all the survival games I’ve played, it has to be Project Zomboid too. Very fun customisability and mods let’s you enjoy any kind of apocalypse you’d like. That said, I always struggle with getting past the early mid game. Once you get set up, it’s hard to find a challenge. I am excited about the crafting systems though, might give some more small goals to help improve getting past that point.

It’s one of my top played games with over 300 hours. I’m not done with it yet neither. Some games after 90 hours, I just cannot touch anymore, but the depth on it is great. When they get NPC’s and the crafting overall, it could be quite awesome. They’re adding smelting and animals also, so you can sustain yourself better, and nails and weapons become less limited in a long play through.

I always like to see if I can survive through winter, and I enjoy that challenge.

Dwarf Fortress kinda counts as a survival game right? Easily that for me.

I have no idea tbh. I’d consider it more strategy/colony sim like Rimworld, even though survival is a big part of it. I really like the game though. I just got bruised because the cavern invaders dropped my game to a crawl after I was pretty invested in it.

Those three are pretty solid. I love Don’t Starve Together as well, Outward, Raft, Subnautica, Terraria, Astroneer. Can’t wait to see if Light No Fire is any good.

Ah, a good list of suggestions. I enjoyed raft, but my PC wasn’t great at the time, and it needs more than 2gb of VRAM. Could probably revisit it when I’m emotionally ready to delve back in! Subnautica is good fun, but quite intense. I have Terraria and Astroneer but not played yet. I’vbe not heard of Outward and know very little about Don’t Starve Together, so I’ll check them out.

My favorite based on hours played is Empyrion Galactic Survival. It’s a little like Minecraft with vehicles and spaceships. It has many planets/moons and many solar systems each with their own assortment of planets/moons/stations/asteroid fields/etc. You start off on a planet, explore facilities, gather resources, build a ship or ships, and take off into space and explore the solar system, mine asteroids, fight or dodge enemy ships, land at friendly space stations, and more. Eventually you can warp to other systems. It’s janky and clunky but there is no other game like it. It does a lot of things Starfield doesn’t do and supports multiplayer/coop.

Oh interesting. Not heard of that. Looking at the trailer, I’m getting No Man’s Sky vibes. Is it similar to that?

It has some similarities. It is clunkier but has has more freedom, you can build ships block by block/system by system or download Steam Workshop creations and have the factory build them, you just supply the materials. There isn’t really a strong storyline or surveying aspect to Empyrion, it’s more about survival, building, fighting, and exploration.

I play it co-op and we use a Polaris as our base and exploration ship. Everything is fully modifiable, and we could fly the USS Enterprise or a Corellian Corvette if we wanted.

The planets aren’t quite as lush and cartoony as NMS, it’s a bit more realistic. More combat too I believe.

Sounds quite interesting. Not sure about the “clunkier” part, but I’ll add it to my wishlist and keen an eye out.

Clunky as in things like enemy AI isn’t great, equipment sometimes doesn’t work until you fiddle with it (actually that’s sort of unintentionally realistic), and sometimes quests are buggy, objectives aren’t clear and sometimes don’t trigger.

But it’s a huge and very flexible open world (open galaxy really) game where you make your own goals much of the time. Some things are not going to be perfect but there is no other game like it if you enjoy the building, exploring, and freedom.

For me, it was, it is and it will be The Long Dark. Especially on Interloper difficulty and preferably during the winter time. One of my all time favorite games.
