A Dutch man, who was convicted in British Columbia of charges including extortion and harassment related to a Canadian teenager who took her own life after he blackmailed her online, had his sentence cut Thursday by an Amsterdam court from 13 years to six.
The title here isn’t very good. He was previously sentenced to 13 years in BC, which was then replaced with a 6 year sentence in accordance with Dutch law.
I personally take the stance that the justice system should be rehabilitative above all else, but I honestly don’t see how someone like this can be rehabilitated. No normal person would be capable of committing such an unambiguously evil act, and it’s a shame he can’t be put away for life.
Coban was already serving an 11-year sentence in the Netherlands for similar crimes targeting 33 other victims when he was extradited to Canada, convicted, and handed the 13-year term.
He’s already been in jail for a while, and as far as I can tell, this new 6 years is added to the end of the current term he’s serving already.
Edit: Confirmed, it is added. The mother of Amanda is praising the Dutch court because this is the longest penalty they’re allowed to impose and it was more than even the prosecutor asked for.
Too little, too late.
