A Canadian was one of the original innovators to create ActivityPub. Who knew?
Good to see a basic survey of the concept and history written for a mainstream audience.
I admit to being cynical of, and suspicious about, the idea of Meta entering the Fediverse. Meta is about monetization, making users on their platforms commodities. I can see Meta setting up an instance, or instances, and trying to lure folks on to it. I’m heartened that, if I understand this part of Federating correctly, instances can de-Federate from a Meta instance.
On the flip side, if Threads starts using ActivityPub it means that people could delete it and make Mastodon accounts that can follow the same content without algorithmic nonsense. Right now it’s a “walled
Gre’thorgarden” but if Meta opens it up users would have the ability to leave.
