Aside from the anti-labour implications of this stuff, even as a consumer it is horrifying to imagine a world where we are constantly questioning whether or not some media was generated by AI. There’s something violating about it.

I don’t care if a machine learning system is being used in some very self-contained way, like to do basic voice-to-speech in a game with a lot of procedurally-generated text. That can even be an important accessibility feature.

However, as soon as it’s being passed off as a real human performance with emotional depth and authorial intent, it’s gross and I don’t want it in my brain.

This is already affecting me tbh. Like autotune in popular music though, the majority of people will probably just forget (if they ever notice in the first place) that it exists.

??? - The Guild says the agreement sets terms and conditions for the use of AI-generated voices, and requires voice actors to consent for the use of their voices and negotiate further terms of use when working with the studio.

The door never should have been opened to AI replacing voice actors, in any manner. This is the way that slope begins. You think the ones who opt out of Replica’s ‘offer’ won’t mysteriously see less work? No, this is either stupidly short-sighted, or intentionally malevolent; and frankly, it fucking disgusts me just how many people are cool with this in the name of some nebulous techbro bazinga-brain’s definition of ‘progress’.

I hope y’all get replaced too, maybe it’ll teach you some fucking solidarity.

It’s going to happen, sooner or later. It’s like trying to keep digital tech out of filming or post-production, or mandating only gaslights instead of electrical lighting. Does it mean some people will lose their jobs and/or career? Sure. But that’s what happens when shit is invented.
