It’s a generation gap thing: If you’re online, are you representing your employer and, therefore, must be on your best behavior, or are you only representing yourself, and everyone else ought to recognize that? NASA feels it’s the former.

Are kids these days not taught the whole “your future employer will check all of your social media accounts before hiring you” thing?

That was one of the things everyone from parents to teachers would tell us, along with other basics like “stuff you post stays on the internet forever”, “never meet someone you talked to on the internet”, and “never reveal your personal information”

Hell, they would even tell us to be careful with pictures taken outside since the background could reveal enough info for people to pinpoint your location.

I obviously don’t observe all of those rules, but I think that people are oversharing way too much

To be fair, many people would probably have a similar reaction if somebody was driving around the city with a megaphone while shouting this to everybody. And that’s kinda what social media is, just that you could be heard by the whole world, not just your city, and your words could be heard forever.

But somehow, many people seem to believe that because it’s online, it doesn’t count.

This was just so sad to read about when it happened. I felt bad for the intern: one arguably small mistake led to such terrible consequences. I felt really bad for Hickam too; he tried to help the intern but I don’t know what came of it.

Yeah, this is sad all around and I don’t think the intern should have been punished for that. They were just excited and high off life. The internet is usually the place where people shit on your successes, so seeing a random person comment on your language is just annoying and troll-like.

They guy should have at least sent a DM and introduced himself, then given the advice.

People should be able to celebrate their successes in the way they want as long as they’re not hurting anyone

On the other hand I think people are insane to not act with decorum on the internet when you’re using your real name. I wouldn’t do that for a second. As for my anonymous accounts? SUCK MY DICK AND BALLS!

I do feel bad for the intern, but that’s what happens when people think the internet is like goofing around with their friends, not a public space where everything you wrote could potentially be read by everyone forever…

Most people would not behave like this if they were interviewed by their local TV news crew, but somehow, it’s different because it’s the internet.

Lmao and it wasn’t just by anyone. That’s Homer Hickam that the movie October Sky was based on.

    This has to be fake.

I remember when it happened, Hickam actually lobbied for her to keep her job, but it wasn’t his call and she was fired.

TBF, Homer was kinda being a little bitch with his initial comment, but at least he followed through all the way with his good intentions.
