I stumbled upon this community for the first time a few minutes ago. I like gardening and houseplants, but never heard of people recretionally growing mushrooms of the non-magical kind. Is it for food?
I grew some oyster mushrooms from pre spawned compost. I liked watching them and then harvesting them after about 10 days. They went great with pasta, butter, and garlic
Why wouldn’t you grow them. They are really tricky but very rewarding. Completely different than growing from seeds. Plus you get mushrooms st the end.
Win win
Plenty of mushrooms are common in Asian cuisine, for example, but you can’t buy them in Germany at all. So I guess that is somewhat recreational :-)
Some gourmet edible mushroom species can be hard or impossible to find in stores but can be grown at home. There are lots of different types with different properties that are fun to learn about and try growing. You can improve your technique and setup. It is sort of like gardening but also very different, and can be done in the off season. It’s a hobby for me but I think there’s a lot of depth possible.
I was thinking of growing mushrooms actually. i live in an apartment, but the only thing i worry about is if there is any risk growing them in the same enviroment where you live (meaning if you grow them in a basement its ok vs your bedroom closet). I would be using them for cooking of course, and for preserving as well. I really love mushrooms, a bit of radagast the brown if you will.
I grew some lions mane for the health benefits and I heard it taste really good. It did not taste good to me. I’m not much of a cook and tried pan frying it. I ended up throwing most of it out. I just bought some supplement instead. It was kinda exciting to watch it grow though.
