The lungs have a harder time clearing mucus out and that eventually scars the lungs and reduces lung function. When I was born they didn’t even know what caused it (DNA defect that has a 25% chance of being passed to a child when both parents are CF carriers) . Now they have target medications to fix the genes that were damaged. It’s pretty amazing. I’m over 15 years post transplant and am doing great.
