memes@lemmy.world•Just found out about PieFed. Doing my part with posting Michsmichs. *BuyFromEUEnglish
31·24 hours agoI switched from lemmy to piefed a few months ago. Most of my experience has been pretty much the same, though I do find that I have to block fewer people/communities to curate my experience on piefed. To use an analogy, piefed feels like lemmy with safesearch enabled. I like the experience with piefed more, but its a fairly marginal difference imo and I’d be fine to move back to lemmy if piefed went down or something
That’s a fair take. They were poised to outcompete/cause the extinction of local pollinators, yeah? (Not my area of the expertise or my corner of the US, so I admittedly didn’t pay a ton of attention when they were in the news)
I’d still split hairs and argue that they were sensationalized, even if there was a valid reason for doing so. Giving any <x> the moniker “murder <x>” is news speak meant to trigger an emotional reaction in the audience. I was in florida at the time and even people that far away were scared of “murder hornets” hurting their kids

I’d guess its a reference to the Asian giant hornet, or “murder hornets” as they were sensationalized a few years ago

“Murder hornets usually live in Japan, South Korea, China, and other East Asian countries. Scientists first confirmed their presence in the U.S. near Blaine, WA, in December 2019. Sightings continued there at least through 2021 and stopped in 2022.”
Rocket is another word for Arugala, for anybody else who knows that green by the latter name and is confused AF by “rocket salad”

9·4 days agoPeople on 4chan are/were also largely really into computers and Linux. Are we going to socially blacklist those things too because of association with 4chan? Should I be berating you for using social media that has forum and image board elements (the fediverse) because 4chan is/was also those things?
Focus on things that are actually harmful rather than trying to virtue signal your own moral purity by attacking anything tangentially associated with them. I’ll listen if you can explain the harm caused by “my favorite gender” memes, but if your argument doesn’t go beyond “4chan bad and they say/said that there sometimes” then I’d advise you to touch some grass

World News@lemmy.world•NATO chief says Europe should ‘keep on dreaming’ if it thinks it can defend itself without the USEnglish
7·9 days agoFirst two paragraphs, sure. I wasnt disagreeing with your conclusions, just pointing out that your analysis was flawed. I share your opinion that Europe is unlikely to be credibly militarily threatened by the US, CN, RU, or even CN+RU. I do think china is significantly closer to being a credible threat than your analysis indicates. Historically, how many expansionist empires have decided they had enough territory on their own?
As far as disagreeing with SIPRI figures… they have been the global academic authority on defense economics for almost 60 years. You are welcome to disagree with them based on vibes but there’s really no more to discuss if you don’t have a reputable source of evidence to back your opinion.
This last paragraph is entirely vibes based on my end, so don’t give it more credit than the opinion of some rando on the fediverse. I don’t know that I’d count on Ukraine to be ride or die with Europe in the future. The rest of Europe certainly has not acted in a way to engender that level of mutual defense with Ukraine in the past 12 years. Maybe the Baltic states have, but the larger European economies have spent 12 years appeasing their gas station dictator rather than fully supporting Ukraine. They are saints beyond what the EU deserves if they do fully commit to the EU defensive bloc in the future.

World News@lemmy.world•NATO chief says Europe should ‘keep on dreaming’ if it thinks it can defend itself without the USEnglish
13·9 days agoYour analysis ignores the concept of purchasing power parity (ppp). I linked a SIPRI faq page below, #12 explains the concept of ppp as it relates to military spending pretty well. The second link I provided shows 2024 global military spend figures that account for ppp.
TLDR: your analysis underestimates European military spend compared to the US but vastly overestimates European military spend compared to Russia or China.

Mild to loud noise, and specifically white noise. The idea is to get something loud enough to drown out other stimuli but consistent enough to eventually mentally tune out. Idk what the professional consensus is on that method as a meditation aid (or if there even is one), but it works for me. I’ve also been able to use loud box fans or atmospheric metal like lantôs or *shels to similar effect
