  • I’m a leftie, but not a tankie. I’m not a fan of autocracy, or defending atrocities. Tankies are misguided but there are many decent communists, even if I do not agree with their views.

On Reddit, the Overton window is way over to the right. You make the point their posts ste downvoted to oblivion, of course with that, any left wing view us often down voted to oblivian. In a space where it is left leaning, like Lemmy, you don’t get that and you have a more diverse debate. You’ll get liberals over on .world engaging with communists, socialists and tankies. Some can handle a site where left wing views are allowed. Some won’t. You have a block feature where you can block, grad, hexbear and even lemmy.ml if you’re really struggling to digest left views.

If not, maybe your views are more rightwards than you realise and that bias on reddit is more comfortable. If that is the case, it may be better for you over there.

I personally don’t get how people cannot understand that people have different views, especially in different countries. I’m left in the UK, a socialist, and sometimes Americans think that is a euthenism for communism because they cannot comprehend that the state can have a role in reducing inequality.

You highlight that genocide denial is rampant, but I see here people comfortable to be critical of Israel’s treatment of Palestine. I think only some genocides/atrocities you want to see discussed.

Either way, I hope you find an environment you’re comfortable in. Not everything has to be a battle.

  • I used to like MSN and even Skype. Skype felt like it degraded under MS. They seem to buy stuff and the product stagnates or regresses. Either they crush innovation or cut funding and try and milk profits. I suspect a lot is integration of Active Directory etc so they can bundle up, sell to orgs and lock them into their shitty ecosystem.

  • You will find that if you lead with that, you’ll be perceived as negative. If you lead with all negative and no positives, you’re going scare everyone away. People who are cynical and negative are offputting. Positivity is a choice. Think about the people in your life. Are they positive or the “well ackshually” types? You may see it as a honest, but if you’re not showing your good side too, you are giving a dishonest picture. Give only as much negative as you give positive. Be honest when things come up. Trust is important.

Why don’t you drive? Environment? If so, communicating you’re doing your bit to help the planet communicates much better when it comes up than “I don’t and will never drive”. It just come across all grumpy smurf “I hate driving!”. Generally on a first date, you meet someone at a venue, and go from there. If you hit off a good rapport, they will not care as they’ll be excited of the positives. Most dating is about feeling. Does this person make you feel good? Is there a positive aura here? Is this more enjoyable than being home? If yes, odds of a second date are quite good.

Everyone gets shy on a date, but if you both don’t talk, no one will. Feel the fear, and do it anyway, so to speak. How can you make someone feel safe if you’re not confident enough to break a silence. How come you’d expect them to do all the talking if they’re also shy?

The key point is, you can meet someone who likes what you like, but you have to create the opportunity for that to happen. If you don’t, you’re choosing the normal not meeting someone path. For record, most of my partners past and present are women that enjoy staying in and watching TV/films and even games. There are many if you want to look for them.

  • The measley non Google portion of revenue is 81m dollar. If you pay a top dev 200k, you could pay 100 top devs 20m and still have 60m to play with.

This is even before considering a Bing/Yahoo/Ecosia deal.

Mozilla will be fine, but they’ll likely need to be leaner. Lay offs will likely play a part in that. Just got to hope they size and structure it right.

It’s a farming game. Farming is a big part of it. Expecting not to farm in a farming game is a little misplaced as an expectation.

I love Rimworld and Stardew, but they’re different. Rimworld is a strategy game in which you strategically plan and the NPCs run their lives until you take control of them.

You can respect a game and not enjoy it. Games are art and taste is important. I hate first person shooters for example. Don’t force yourself if you don’t want to, but expectation and comparison are thief’s of joy. If you want to enjoy something, don’t expect, just play and let it guide you and choose which parts of the mechanics you enjoy interacting with more.

  • Best to just lead with the facts. “Due to having issues with x, y and z, I went to the doctor. After further investigation it has been confirmed as stage 2 xxxxxx cancer. I’m still trying to understand more about it.”

As another poster said, give them time to emotionally process this. They care about you so are naturally going to be affected and that is fine. Doing this in person is preferable.

  • Sorry to hear this.

Stage 2 means it is still localised, right? It may have been found in time and is treatable.

I don’t know about your uncles cancer or what stage it was but not all cancers are the same and some are very treatable. In one type of cancer, survival after 5 years is 99% for stage 1, 95% for stage 2, 50-6i% for stage 3 etc. Stage 2 can be a very winnable battle. Even stage 3 can be a worthwhile battle.

You may be avoiding a very winnable battle in which you can have a long and enjoyable life after some short term discomfort. Some cancers can he treated in a localised manner with radiotherapy rather than chemo.

I implore you to verify what the treatment options are and success rates before making a hasty and final decision.

A relative of mine came back from stage 2 doing pretty well and is pretty happy after a year of treatment. Some of it obviously a little challengeing, but they have no regrets.
