They started in the US as, get this, a way to sell spelling books to children. Because the US had (and has!) it’s own spelling system, the standard spelling book was being sold to schools around the country and to sell more of them, the publishers held competitions.

That is pretty much how they do it. They do have spelling bees in China, and it’s more about writing the correct character down than reciting it.

I think a lot of people here are experiencing schadenfreude, and aren’t capable of contextualizing that anymore. You’re not wrong, not even remotely. Sadly, a bull that’s wrong and a bull that’s right still butt heads and the heaviest bull will win regardless.

Stoicism should not be a shield to guard you from reality. Acknowledge those things that you cannot control, that many people do in fact suck, and focus on the choices you can make. We know people suck, and that history tells us they can suck a whole lot harder. You can accept defeat, tell yourself nothing can be done and resign yourself to whatever consequences may come from that, or?
