If all you want is KDE and install programs via flatpak and don’t want to manage the system, there is a distro for that. It’s atomic so you cannot mess with the system. Other than flatpaks, you can install programs via homebrew there.

Regarding programs that you find on Github, they usually have an Arch package. In Aurora, you can install Arch inside distrobox, it does the job for you, you just need to select the correct one. And you install the program you want inside it (using sudo pacman -S program) and use it like you installed it on your system next time.

  • It’s great for people who don’t want to take control of the system part but take control of their data. I installed one on my aunt’s PC and she’s quite happy with it.

I used to had to login via Teamviewer when something goes wrong, or even worse, describe her to login into tty and give commands to fix the situation. She’s been using Linux for almost 9 years now and I did that at least 3 times over the phone. Twice it was Ubuntu that got borked after an update and once it was LMDE.

Last time, I installed Aurora and so far it’s been fine. It hasn’t been long so I cannot compare and say it’s better so ask me 2 years later if you remember. :) (do we have a !remindme bot here?)

However I have a feeling that I won’t have to deal with such things anymore.

When I switched to Wayland (bspwm to river) it took me ~6 months to exactly replicate my workflow. Mostly because I didn’t have time and did it on really slow pace. It was fun though but it can take time if you do everything manually and learn new things. On the other hand, I did the similar workflow on KDE on an evening.
