The problem is that part of the setup of the original anti-slavery party was that it incorporated a business element: you’d patronize Republican businesses to promote the cause of ending slavery. After Nixon, where they flipped on human rights, all that was left was the big business part, with everything else just being there to manipulate people into supporting it.
