My partner had to go to work because her boss wouldn’t give her the day off. My kids spent twenty minutes crying because they wanted Mummy to stay off and all I’ve done is clean the house.

It won’t help today, but you are an adult and there is no law that requires you to celebrate on the actual birthday. So if the day is a write off, then just celebrate next weekend when your partner does have the day off and the kids are in a better mood.
