hey guys.
didn’t watch wrestling for quite some time. last time i was kinda invested was when we had smack down for playstation 1, something like 25 years ago.
rewatched the legendary hell in a cell match from mankind and undertaker last week. since then i watched this years royal rumble and a few more events and was hooked again.
so what are the events, you think, i should watch to catch up?
Assuming you’re just referring to WWE (less if you inquire otherwise): We’re in the road to Wrestle Mania right now (The Royal Rumble was just days ago) and WM is in 2mo. WWE also (depending where you live, but I think its in most places now) is now available on Netflix (older content available depending on when its uploaded) so easiest place to start is probably just from the Jan 6th raw (beware that specific episode sucks lol). Otherwise Just go back to the last 2-3 PPV’s at the most, watch them and you’ll be caught up enough with the important stuff.
NXT and NJPW from roughly 2015-2020 were tied for best overall imo. Highlights from that off the top of my head:
Omega v Okada (if you only pick one thing from this list, this one)
Asuka breaking Goldberg’s undefeated record
Toru Yano v anyone
Gargano v Ciampa
NXT bringing back War Games matches
Mauro Ranallo
Broken Matt Hardy (tna)
Cody Rhodes v Dustin Rhodes (very early aew)
Tag team matches became main event level and are really good. Look for any ppv match with: DIY, The Revival, Undisputed Era, Young Bucks, and probably lots more I’m forgetting
Any NXT ppv, any NJPW Wrestle Kingdom ppv, they’re all great
=========================
WWE highlights from that time period:
Smackdown, for about a year starting from the 2016 reboot until Wrestlemania 2017
Survivor Series 2016
AJ Styles v James Ellsworth (ladder match and world title match)
Ronda Rousey
4 horsewomen

Then there was a new company founded in 2019 that’s become #2 worldwide (aew), so go check that out if you haven’t. But I’ll stop here at 2020 since this post is long enough.
that’s gonna kill some (read: a lot) time.
thanks so much for that!tag matches look way better than they used to be, that’s for sure.
but also the women are at such a different level now.
Selfishly, Kenny Omega’s return this past January at Wrestle Dynasty was worth it just because of the uncertainty if he would wrestle again :)
Welcome back to wrestling! Some good suggestions already so I’ll just add as you ease back into the overwhelming amount of content you’ve missed that cagematch.net can be a good resource for looking up specific wrestlers, promotions, matches, etc.
Also although I don’t follow them regularly the Cultaholic youtube page has some good playlists of documentaries and summary videos for all kind of wrestling related stuff. Have fun!
thanks, man.
oh yeah, so overwhelming. times have changed a lot, it seams. we had no internet, back in the day. so all information was from friends at school etc.matchcard is the thing, that doesn’t spoil the results on cagematch.net, right?
matchcard is the thing, that doesn’t spoil the results on cagematch.net, right?
Correct!
So, are you looking for a good place to jump in to the current product, or are you looking to see some of the stuff you missed along the way?
If the latter, I heartily recommend you watch All In 2018. It’s probably the most historically consequential wrestling show since the final WCW Monday Nitro, and the wrestling is really good too. I would also recommend the first three seasons of Lucha Underground, since it was a show with a really unique take on what wrestling could be, and so many of its stars (Prince Puma/Ricochet, Killshot/Swerve Strickland, Penta, etc) have gone on to become some of wrestling’s top names. You can skip season 4; it was pretty clear the wheels were coming off at that point.
the latter, for sure. was never a big fan of promos.
should have been more clear, sorry for that.sounds lile a solid starting point.
jumping right in was kinda tough. there’s a lot going on nowadays. wwe, aew, roh, tna, njpw.
will have a look at lucha underground, for sure. saw penta one, two times already, cool guy.
you know of some wrestlemanias etc, that stood out, maybe? as a german, i had to watch bash in berlin. damn, the crowd went nuts.
I always love the Final Battle 2012 ppv from Ring of Honor. I can’t find it online, but the Ladder War main event was posted on their channel.
