(New Zealander, 1869-1947)
Frances Mary Hodgkins was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand’s most prestigious and influential painters, although it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.
I quite like that actually. I wasn’t familiar with her.
Me too. I love how she left the sky and the details in the upper half largely unfinished, but all in all, it’s still very clear what the scene is. I’ve posted her here before and I’m sure I will again.
I looked through her page and prefer this to her later works I think. But I am a true sucker for that end of the 1800s time period.
This is actually quite impressive with watercolor.
