    Michigan bills that would require landlords to do repairs within 48 hours or renters can withhold never made it out of the committee.

    Yeah, the people voting on these bills own real estate. They aren’t gonna make their own life hard.

    We have this in Chicago. It’s great in theory. It generally works well for middle class renters who may have just enough backing to fight it if the landlord is shitty. But for those who need it the most, initiating something like this without any backing to fight it typically results in people not withholding rent to avoid confrontation or keep the little stability they may have. I hope Michigan can come up with a system to back these bills that would better support the people who need them the most.
