One of my pet peeves with Vim is that by default the buffer splitting behaves a bit weird:

    Do people actually type out :split? I didn’t even know that existed, just it’s just ^Ws to me.

      I’ve always used :sp & :vsp, though I’m not spending all day in a multi-split env.
