I’m in this picture, but I also learnt over the years that sometimes it doesn’t take a lot of knowledge to be the company expert on a topic. It can easily boil down to having asked another company about some information, or having seen something before.

And yet I doubt myself on knowing enough about things I do on a daily basis and have been doing professionally for years 🤷

As long as you acknowledge your doubt and recognize how good you’re really doing your job, that should be a good thing. Just don’t dwell on it.

or joining the company under the premise to “self educate” on the topic, resulting in being the only person knowing anything about that topic.

Supervisor: We know some about it.

Department head: We’ve used it before.

Board member: People have been using this a lot.

I get called on at work a lot for questions and training on our websites, but i honestly feel like the least knowledgable person in the entire company. It took a few years before it dawned on me that im not called on a lot because of the information i know, but rather for my ability to find the information i dont.

Knowing who to ask has been one of my strengths. I don’t know everything but I usually know someone in the company that knows more than me.

What everyone is missing here is that it isn’t just about knowing things, it is also about how you communicate those things and how you present yourself.

It’s true. I’ve gone from telling people

      Fuck if I know

      To

I’ll look into it and back to you (Even if I never get back to them most times…)

Has done wonders for my career

Am I an expert in <insert topic>? No, but I’ve been Googling since before Google and can for sure get you some legit sounding answers pretty quickly.
