I knew he was going to lose his last match, that’s just how the business generally is - you lose your last match.
The problem is he lost a few of his previous matches leading into this one, I think that’s where they fucked up. OR it was Cena’s call to lose said matches. either way the retirement run fumbled a few times. YES he should have lost the last match and he did but NO he shouldn’t have lost the previous matches leading into this one.
So the issue is people were thinking “well he lost his previous matches, he HAS to win this one” and nope, he didn’t. I don’t think this will turn fans away regardless of the chants and rhetoric online. WWE has done A LOT worse than this and fans have stuck around.
But if the interviews leading up to this by Cena are to be believed, this was his call, this is what he wanted.
What happened?
In general (I’ll post a clip of the match finish in a bit)
-Great entrance, introduction, fanfare, not a single “john cena sucks” chant during his entrance for the first time in like 15 years.
-Lots of crowd pop moments like the last ever 5 knuckle shuffle and whatnot, a super AA/FU (which Cole called the FU), the announce team giving a show of respect to JR and Tazz despite being AEW
-didn’t watch the whole match but ending wise: gunther submits cena after a fake-out escape, final moments is cena giving a little “that was a good career” smile and a wet fart tap out.
-immense heat from the fans on gunther cause the IWC are pants-on-head-stupid
-fans chant AEW/fuck saudi/saudi sucks/you fucked up at lesvesque at the post-show stupid interview thing they do as lesvesque mocks them for their chants

Fans chanting you fucked up at HHH during the post show, we’re totally getting a “My Friend Mark” promo at some point 🤦♂️ and as usual a lot of the IWC are showing their asses as the 12yo children they are, apparently some people online throwing out death threats over the show and wishing Gunther breaks his own neck lmao 🙄 Fans post show following Gunther to his bus while he’s being protected by security lol

It’s the little smile and dainty tap that ruined it, if he looked like he was dying and it was the only thing to do to survive, I wouldn’t be anywhere near as pissed as I was.
I think I’m done with American wrestling.
I won’t criticize the match because I’m just not into WWE’s style of wrestling, but a little smirk and a tap he could have used to burp a baby was a lame ass ending to Cena’s career. Having a clip of Vince in the farewell video was just a cherry on the turd cake for me.
They shoulda done it at the spot where the ref was checking if he was conscious, make it so Gunther had to literally almost kill Cena to win, I wouldn’t have been as pissed at the finish, not whatever that finish was.
I would have been fine with it ending when it did if Cena would have sold it like he was actually in pain. Instead he looked like he was about to shrug and say, “Well, THAT just happened.”
I guess it’s on me, too. I know I don’t like WWE’s style so I don’t know why I went in expecting something I’d like.
