This Valentine’s Day there is a lot of red on the screen for the X.Org Server with the code delta as a result of renaming of their main Git development branch and in the process selectively dropping questionable patches to the prior “master” codebase.

The effort noted in January of X.Org Server May Create A New Selective Git Branch With Hopes Of A New Release This Year has now been realized. As of a short time ago today, the “master” Git branch is ended with new X.Org Server development now on “main” and in the process starting off from a starting point of 2024 and then laying on the acceptable patches that were queued up over the past two years. See that aforelinked article for more details.

There is an individual who claims to pay 4x on energy because of “green” policies, that we are all communists and should stop breathing.

Triggered by a branch name change. I am fucking dead. It’s hilarious.

I kind of want to use master on all my projects and change to main on any that get popular just to weed out the lunatics.

You’ll also weed out the BDSM crowd, are you sure you want that loss of talent?

          master( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)main

For new repos, main wins purely from typing ergonomics.

For an existing project with downstreams, CI, scripts, and various other integrations referencing it? I’ve seen projects break their stuff and others in process like this. Hours of busy-work and sometimes weeks or more of coordination for little gain. Not worth it.

In case of X.org it appears to be part of a larger rebase and wider project migration - sounds like it could be a case where there were other practical reasons to create a new branch instead of force-pushing over the existing one.

People trying to reinject identity politics into stuff this are mostly just reading leaves if they aren’t trolling.

Yeah, don’t ever go to the Phoronix forums if you value your sanity.
