rabbit hole post inspired by a comment from @[email protected] asking if they can get weed abroad like they can in the US.

tldr is that there are 58 countries to choose from where weed is fully legal or decriminalized and an additional 10 where medical use is authorized.

I’ll use Thailand as an example for getting a prescription since i’ve spent plenty of time there and weed and weed culture is huge over there.

Thailand fully decriminalized weed several years ago, but the new health minister restricted weed to medical use late last year. Trivial prescription to get.

Anxiety? Trouble sleeping? Go to a same-day clinic, pay 10-30 USD, you’ll be out in 15 minutes with your prescription. Lasts 30 days and is renewable; your annual prescription cost is offset in a couple weeks by the low cost of living in Thailand($100-400 rent, $3 AYCE buffets, $5 phone plans).

There are tons of dispensaries and weed cafes across Thailand. Also, Thailand is amazing in general: etter healthcare than the US, great massages, amazing art, great food, beautiful beaches and forests, great place to live.

Recreational weed’s fully legal in 8 countries, decriminalized in about 48 additional countries(like the US), so you have 56 weed-legal countries to choose from around the world, most of which offer low-cost high-quality living and unregulated weed.

About 10 other countries have medical cannabis available but recreational is not, so there are 66 countries to get high in.

I will always advocate for cultivating your own regardless of legality, but when you’re on the move, that can be challenging.

Stating the obvious here because I think it’s worth remembering: legality and availability vary wildly in the US too. Sometimes the laws aren’t even consistent from county to county within a single state. What is considered “normal” for you might be completely different from what someone just a short drive away is experiencing.

I mention the US because it highlights that whether you are domestic or international, it’s going to take some planning to ensure you can get what you need no matter where you go. Availability is going to fluctuate based on local enforcement and culture no matter what borders you cross.

Great points about availability across the US. I couldn’t agree more about growing your own, this is just a little reassurance that yea, people can get high outside of the circumstances they’re familiar with.

I understood the message, no worries. I only used the US as an example to highlight the fact that complacency is often a bigger factor than legality no matter where you’re traveling.

It’s easy to hand wave traveling as too hard if you can’t see beyond what’s in front of you. Mental borders, if you will.

For sure. Complacency, routine, mental borders that urge us to ignore the rest of the world.

I call the mental borders our fishbowls. We’re all wearing a clear, glass fishbowl on our heads like a helmet and the fishbowl is so filled with culture, lessons, memories, experiences that everything outside the fishbowl, the whole actual world and how it functions, can barely be seen for all the clutter in our fishbowl.
