Over the past week or two, I’ve been discussing merging this community with c/world. The intents and purposes of both of these communities are essentially the same, and we don’t really see a reason to divide that community rather than just put it all under one roof.
We’re open to any and all opinions on this, and nothing is set in stone so please feel free to reply candidly.
Please speak up especially if you feel like:
-
You wouldn’t like this for really any reason
-
You feel this community already serves a different purpose
-
You feel this community could serve a different purpose, and include what changes you’d like to see to meet that goal.
I work with the head mod of c/world, @[email protected], on c/NFL and talk to him regularly, we’re both pretty much on the same page about everything and moderate communities in a similar manner, so if your only reservation would be possible stricter or different moderation, I hope that alleviates some of the concern. All of the mods from here would also be welcome to join over there if we do merge.
It seems like a great idea to me! Having parallel communities isn’t a serious problem, but it is inconvenient in numerous ways.
I have had success merging my communities. I ran PS5 and then was given ownership of PlayStation. I posted locked vote posts in each community with two comments. One for yes, one for no. Only upvotes on the comments were counted as some instances disable downvotes. Each community overwhelming voted to merge under c/PlayStation. Since then it has been smooth sailing.
I left the previous community open (with a pinned post explaining the merge) for people to use if they want to, but so far everyone migrated no problem.
Currently I am only subbed here since I don’t want double posts, but I am for the merge and will easily just sub to the new community.
I am actually the one that gave you PS5 haha, but thanks for the input
Oh haha! Didn’t notice the username. Thanks again!
What do you mean by a merge?
If you’re considering locking this community down and turning it into a permanent redirect to c/world, please don’t. You would essentially be parking this community name for no good purpose.
That’s fair, but do you really feel there needs to be two co-existing communities for the same thing with less than 5k people in this one?
I think they serve two different purposes. “World news” is literally event by event news, “world” can be more discussion-oriented (edit: well, except that they… only allow news articles, geez).
I just posted an op-ed in /c/worldnews a minute ago thinking “huh this would fit better if there were a /c/world, this isn’t exactly news so much as analysis” (then just now seeing this post). If we learned one thing from reddit it’s not to centralize control over communities.
Gotcha, yeah, many people seem on board with a merge, but given that some people aren’t and it’s not particularly close to unanimous I don’t think we will be doing it. Thanks for the feedback!
You or me perhaps not, but someone else might. Since you appear to want to join the team of c/world, I see no reason to not leave this community open for someone else to take over.
Multiple communities can exist, especially for a subject like world news.
I mean, I’m not leaning more one way than the other, it just seemed like a reasonable proposal to put it all under one roof. I consulted the community for a reason, it isn’t just my opinion that matters regardless. Thank you for the input.
I like it.
I’m okay with a merger.
I have nothing relevant to add, just to say I like the idea.
And thanks for the moderation!
OKay
I’m fine with this
I’ve been banned twice in c/world because one of the mods doesn’t like my political views, so I vote no. They want an echo chamber, and that’s not how political news works.
Edit: YoBucksStopsHere and JordanLund are great people. It’s not them.
May I ask when you were banned? Because YoBuckStopsHere only recently became the owner of the community, it may have been the prior mods/owners that did it.
They want an echo chamber, and that’s not how political news works.
I whole heartedly agree.

I honestly don’t know how people post these sources (or why you’re posting that here for that matter). There’s all these random Israeli firms with names like “NGO Monitor” or “UN Watch” that are just basically pundit organizations dressed up as watchdogs. Sketchy as hell.
Q: What is NGO Monitor?
A: NGO Monitor, a project of the Institute for NGO Research, is an independent and nonpartisan research institute dedicated to promoting transparency and accountability of NGOs claiming human rights agendas, primarily in the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
NGO Monitor is the leading source of information on political NGOs active in delegitimization campaign against Israel and the role of both government and private funders-enablers.
^ Note how this is their entire stated purpose as an organization. This is so weird.

It was 2 days ago. They weren’t the mod when it happened. To be fair, it was technically bannable. But removing the post would have been sufficient.
I usually don’t ban anyone unless they give us no choice. While I don’t agree with everyone’s perspective, I respect it. Everyone is invited to their opinion as long as it doesn’t violate the TOS or community rules.
TB, I think that ban has passed BTW. Should be the standard 3 day deal.
It’s fine. It helped me to adjust my posting. I think it was just the knee jerk ban that miffed me, with no warning. But I also understand modding isn’t easy, and it’s easier to just stop things before they start.
Expires in 10 hours it says.
That’s 40 Palestinian kids.
