I wouldn’t be so sure, he’s pretty far down the libertarian rabbit hole and this was just a move to ensure continued support of Trump from libertarian voters.

The guy tried to kill five people. What’s the appropriate sentence for murder for hire?
- He wasn’t charged with murder for hire.
- Two of the DEA agents that solicited this actually tried to steal millions from the seizure, and each received custodial sentences for it.
- The other time he tried to hire a hitman, it was a crypto scammer.

That’s a fair point that he wasn’t convicted for murder-for-hire, but it still factored into his sentencing. Also, being shitty at murder-for-hire doesn’t make you less guilty of the attempt.
Did he, though? He wasn’t charged with that, nobody was harmed, the cops involved were incredibly corrupt and DID end up charged with various crimes, and the guy he apparently “tried to kill” says he didn’t and should be freed.

I’m not a prosecutor but it was presented in court and factored into his sentencing.
He was not prosecuted for any of the “murder for hire” attempts.

Russ was guilty of creating and operating Silk Road and there is no question about it. However this case included two corrupt FBI agents and a very unusual sentence.
I think Ulbricht received a disproportionately harsh sentence for his crime of running an online dark web narcotics marketplace. El Chapo only got one life sentence, plus 30 years for his role as a drug cartel kingpin. And last I checked, the Sinaloa Cartel are responsible for torturing and murdering hundreds, likely thousands of people through some of the most brutal and sadistic methods known to man. Ulbricht’s body count by comparison? Zero, unless you count the two attempts he made to hire hitmen.
As for why Ross got pardoned… A few months ago Trump visited the Libertarian National Convention on his electoral campaign and pledged to commute Ross Ulbricht’s sentence to that of “time served,” which suddenly made an otherwise-booing Libertarian crowd erupt into cheers.
Good on him for actually keeping to his word. He could very easily have flipped the middle finger to the Libertarians who voted for him based on that pledge.
I’m glad he has kept 1 promise. Maybe Ross was made an example of, by flouting laws and technical ability. Like some sort of “I’m smarter than you” kinda way. Or maybe he’s the guy that made a mistake that lead to him being caught, and was made an example of as if “yeh, we can catch you”.

Still, it’s a crappy justice system if literally running an international drug cartel thats administering adrenaline to torture victims (so they don’t fall unconscious), skinning them alive and hacking off their limbs with a chainsaw until they die gets you a lighter prison sentence than being a Libertarian web developer who ran the “Amazon of illegal narcotics” and went down what I can best describe as a dollar tree Walter White style descent into criminality.
And that’s just one of the cartel’s many torture and murder methods. They genuinely make ISIL seem merciful by comparison.
I’m not saying Ross didn’t do anything wrong (he certainly did) but there are worse convicts in the criminal justice system who are getting the chance of parole that Ross was denied.
